Public Speaking Nervousness - How To Overcome It

By: Regina Maniam

Public speaking nervousness is experienced by a lot of people. You may have prepared your speech and know its content well, and yet you get butterflies in your stomach.

There are some tips that han help you overcome your public speaking nervousness.

Practice Presenting Your Speech

1. Center On Yourself

Stand properly with your feet directly under your hips. For public speaking, this position is about the best and also the most stable. Rehearse this position in front of the mirror or with somebody.

2. Relax Your Shoulders

Your larynx is directly supported by the muscles in the shoulders, so it has an effect on your voice. Roll out your shoulders.

3. Warm Up Your Voice

Public speaking engagements are performances. Rehearse your speech. Prepare to avoid public speaking nervousness.

Breathe deeply into the bottom part of your lungs till your rib cage expands a little higher than the navel. Sigh thrice. The body takes this as a signal that everything is alright and it is alright to relax. Now make a sound like a siren. Start from a high to a low note at the bottom part of your voice range. You will soon be able to find the low note connecting to the place located right above the navel, with enough practice. This is your natural voice pitch.

Directing Your Voice and Thoughts

1. Your Voice

Imagine that every word you speak is like a laser beam traveling from your mouth on towards the end person listening to you. You need to practice this outlook! Visualize it! This way you will able to reach out to audience.

2. Your Thoughts

Pay attention to what are your thoughts. Make sure that your communication is complete and rounded off. Many a time people leave some thoughts without any ending. If you begin with something, end it as well.

3. Articulate Properly

When you speak, articulate clearly and watch out for proper diction.

During Question Time

1. Allocate Time For Questions

Make sure you allow time for questions. If your speech extends over time, you will find yourself going through very fast and lose the value of the content. Plan well to ensure sufficient time for the speech and questions.

2. Before Answering

First breathe out slightly. You have a tendency to take in more air than you need, and hold on while trying to think, when you experience public speaking nervousness. This typically causes you to panic and does not help you. Before you speak, breathe in air first. This allows you to relax and think clearly and logically.

Public speaking nervousness can be conquered by preparing and using specific techniques. Give it a go for the next public speaking engagement.
