Learn How to Start Selling on eBay

By: haviland

If you have been thinking of joining the growing number of people who are making a full time living from selling on eBay, then you need to go into it armed with the best possible advice in order to succeed.

Owning an eBay business is one of the simplest ways to earn money online. It's an amazing fact that most of the world's internet sales are made by selling on eBay, so there is obviously a huge potential for you to cash in on this although there are pitfalls for the unwary. So you must know what you are doing in order to maximize your income.

It is reckoned that there are about 1,000,000 people who are selling on eBay, but not all of these are full time sellers. Although this is a huge number, it pales into insignificance when compared to the number of potential buyers, so it is still possible for a new eBay business to make good profits with the right advice.

There is a tremendous range of items that you can sell, ranging from physical merchandise, digital download products or even low-priced ebooks. You can use the ebooks as a vehicle to advertise your affiliate links and have another stream of income from that. Obviously, you can also sell your own products which you have created. However, I would suggest that you don't get overcomplicated to start with, just concentrate on selling one or two items and seeing some profit coming in before you add more products to your portfolio.

I must stress that if you are looking to start a long term business selling on eBay, then you must treat it like a business. It will not be good enough to put up a few items for sale with a badly thought out advertisement and expect to make your first million dollars overnight!

Writing down a business plan will help you to focus your ideas. Here are a few suggestions as to what to think about in your plan.

Firstly, it is imperative that you research your market. This will involve doing quite a bit of homework on eBay in order to find your target market and the product or products that you want to offer them.

Once you have decided on your product, then research the best keywords to use in your advertising .

Go back to eBay and spend a couple of weeks looking round for similar items, in order to see what you are up against in terms of price and marketing strategies. This will also give you an idea of important details about your product to include in your advertising that you may not have thought about.

If you are offering a physical product, how are you going to deliver it? Will you keep a stock at home or pass the order on to the wholesaler.

Work out your means of delivery and associated costs. You will need to know this in order to price your product with a realistic profit margin.

One of the big advantages of selling on eBay is that you don't have the costs associated with designing and hosting your own website. However you do need to think very carefully about the wording of your advertisement.

For example, what are the merits of your product or service and why should somebody want to pay you money for it? Does it offer something unique or is it especially good value? Why should a prospective customer purchase from you and not from a competitor?

Get a good quality picture of your product, as this can really help customers to visualize what it is that you are offering them.

Try to get some testimonials for your product or your service, with an email address if possible, you can then include that in your advertising. Whatever you do don't be tempted to make this up, as prospective customers do use this service and there is no quicker way to lose your hard earned reputation than a fake reference!

Finally, take care of your customers. Follow up with them and make sure that they are happy with the product that they have purchased, this will then hopefully make them into repeat customers. With this in mind always capture their email address in order to advertise related products or services to them.

eBay also encourages buyers to leave feedback on you and your service, so don't be afraid to ask customers to do this as it this shows on your sales page and helps to build up your reputation as a trustworthy person to do business with.

The good news is that whatever it is that whatever it is that you are trying to sell, there is almost certainly someone out there who wants it and as they have come looking for you, so selling on eBay should not be too difficult if your product and advertisement are sound.

Finally, you are not on your own in starting out, if you do some research you will find that there several good sites where established eBay power sellers will offer help to inexperienced beginners.
