Build Self Esteem Tips

By: Regina Maniam

How can you build self esteem or improve self esteem and stay above whatever the situation? There are few techniques that you can use as a starter guide.

Imagine one of those action movies where knives are being thrown at the hero or heroine and how deftly he or she avoids each one of them. Not being able to avoid will cause injury, sometimes minor and at other times could be major. This very much depicts the kind of situation you will be in. You basically are trying to avoid, those knives that can hurt your self esteem and potentially pull you down. So how do you avoid these knives? Here are some self esteem tips:

1. Negative Work Environment

It is a "dog eat dog" world out there as people will say. People are fighting to get and stay ahead. It does not matter how hard you work or how much you contribute to the outcome. So what if you missed lunch and went home late for the last few weeks.

Of course, this is not always the case. But there are times when some people will find themselves in this situation. When this happens, stay above the negativity. Look for the knowledge and experience that you have gained and feel good about it inside. If the negativity continues, that is a message for you to use your experience and skills to look for a job somewhere else.

2. Other People's Behavior

You will find all kinds of people. There will be complainers and whiners, who no matter how good the situation will find something to complain or whine about. Then there the pathetic cases, who always behave like they are being victimized. You will also find bullies, gossipmongers, backstabbers and all kinds of people who will distract from the objectives and generate bad vibes, which could affect your own ability to progress and affect your self esteem.

Keep your chin up, remember what your objectives are and stay above the situation, so that you do not allow such behaviors to get to you.

3. Changing Environment

When the office environment changes, it could also impact how you do your job. It could be that your immediate manager changed and is completely different from your previous ones. Such changes tests our flexibility and adaptability to the way we respond. There may be stress for a while, but again focus on the business objectives, and adapt to a new way of working.

You will find that this actually broadens your experience and ability to respond to a changing environment.

4. Past Experience

Do not last your past experience that may have hurt you turn into fear when you face future situations. Look for the lessons in the situation and adapt your solution so that this time you can succeed.

5. Negative World View

There is always negative news in the world. Just look at the media headlines. Or just listen to the running commentary that some people are willing to provide about what the world is coming too.

If you are in a difficult situation, you are in it. There are two things you can do. Stay there and wallow in self pity. Or think of how to get out of it. Choose to do the latter so that you can get out of it or make the best of it. You will be the better person for it.

If it is just talk that you hear, just let it go past you. Do not even delve to listen or empathize. It only affects you negatively. You put negative images in your mind often enough, and this is what gets played back in your life.

If you think that some people are born leaders or positive thinkers, then that is not correct. Being positive and staying positive is a choice. Building self esteem by working on improving yourself is something that you need to look out for. If you have a good manager or mentor, then be thankful. It is a bonus.

Despite saying all this, there will be times when the going gets tough. How can you build self esteem and be prepared? Always give your best. Do not be concerned about who gets the credit. Stay above the noise, the unnecessary talk and griping. Get help if you need. Identify your mentors, who can help you. Focus on the objectives and what it takes to achieve them. When it is over, remember to thank the people who contributed. Be grateful!

When you build self esteem, it leads to self improvement. You become responsible for who you are and what you do. This person that you become will slowly be felt not only by you but more importantly by the people around you.
