A Simple Way How To Enjoy Life

By: Regina Maniam

Do you want to know the easiest way how to enjoy life? It is very simple. Just change your point of view or to put it another way, look at the situation differently.

It is like how some people see a glass half full, while the others see the same as half empty.

If you were placed second or third in a competition, will you be happy and push harder the next time. Or be upset that you did not come out first and be discouraged and look for reasons not to participate again.

The choice is yours. Do you want to accept whatever has happened and move on optimistically to meet the challenges of life or be a pessimist and just find every other reason why things cannot happen?

Typically optimism has been linked with good morale, a positive outlook and success in your endeavors. You would think that most people would take the optimistic approach considering that life will be better.

Fact of the matter is that the rates of depression and pessimism have never been higher. It affects middle-aged adults the same way it hits younger people. The mean age of onset has gone from 30 to 15. It is no longer a middle-aged housewife’s disorder but also a teen-ager’s disorder as well.

Let's look at how optimists are in action and researches that back up why it really pays to be an optimist:

Optimists Expect The Best

Characteristic of pessimists is their belief that bad events are their own fault.

The truth is optimists face the same hard knocks of this world. It is the way that they view the situation that is different. For optimists, any bad events faced are just a temporary setback. They learn what they can from it and just carry on. In fact, optimists anticipate problems and plan on how to respond to them. They just put in that extra effort to overcome these setbacks.

Positive expectancies of optimists also predict better reactions during transitions to new environments, sudden tragedies and unlikely turn of events. If they fall, they will stand up. They see opportunities instead of obstacles.

People Respond Positively To Optimists

Optimists are typically happy people. They are proactive and do not need to control or manipulate people. On the contrary, they usually draw people towards them. Their optimistic view of the world can be contagious and influence those they are with.

Optimistic people are better as opposed to those who bring gloom and a defeatist attitude. They only talk about why things cannot happen and stop there without helping to figure out how to make them happen.

When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going

When the going gets tough, a pessimist is more likely to quit and find many reasons why things will not work.

An optimist, on the other hand, keeps finding alternative paths to handle the situation. Or if it is not worthwhile, will make a conscious decision to drop the matter and carry on with life.

Optimists persevere and do not give up easily. They patiently work at it, waiting for the right moment to move in to achieve that next step to achieve their goals.

Optimists Are Healthier And Live Longer

Medical research shows that a positive outlook in life and enjoying the simple pleasures of life can result in an increase in the body's ability to fight disease.

Optimists’ are typically very healthy. They age well, and seem to suffer lesser than most people from the usual physical ills of middle age. And they get to outlive those prone to negative thoughts.

There will be times when you will hit roadblocks. But as Clement Stone said "every adversity has the seed of an equivalent or greater benefit". Do what it takes to overcome the problems and move on to greater things in life.

The simple secret to how to enjoy life is to be an optimist rather than a pessimist. Have a positive outlook to life. Do what it takes. It may not be easy for a start, but with practice, you will soon start taking these challenges in your stride.
